ISTI/HPC Colloquium: “Storage for Large Data Centers and High Performance Computing”

Abstract:  EMC's Federal CTO, Nicholas Combs will be giving an open talk at LANL on storage for large data centers and high performance computing.  Nick will focus on challenges EMC and industry face, both in the U.S. government and commercial space as data centers and super computers continue to grow at exponential rates.  The talk will be followed by a 30 - 45 minute discussion during which Nicholas is interested in engaging LANL staff in a technical discussion.

Biography:  Nick has more than twenty-six years of experience managing, leading, and developing information technology solutions for the Military, Intelligence, Federal Government and commercial sectors. He is currently the Chief Technology Officer for EMC Federal, in his role he provides guidance and direction for product managers and engineers to develop solutions to some of the government’s biggest challenges.  Prior to this, he held senior government positions as the Deputy Chief for Enterprise IT Solutions, Defense Intelligence Agency, where he was responsible for the engineering and program management of all activities in the Department of Defense Intelligence Information Systems (DoDIIS) environment.  He has served as the IT Director and Chief Information Officer of the National Media Exploitation Center (NMEC) under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Under his leadership, this organization became a tier one support activity for the U.S. Special Operations community and a key element in supporting the Global War on Terrorism.  Nick currently serves on the Executive Advisory Committee of the Government Information Technology Executive Council (GITEC).  Nick has received numerous awards and recognition throughout his career to include two Defense Meritorious Civilian Service awards, the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Meritorious Service Medal.  Nick is also a decorated Army veteran that proudly served in many campaigns to include in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Somalia, Rwanda, and Panama.  Nick has served on many industry and government standards boards and serves on the Board of Advisors of several small companies.
